The Hope Sanctuary

Alma Parris Memorial Secondary School

Project Summary
Funding for the training of teachers to use the MICO Diagnostic Reading Test which is a tool designed for use by English teachers or persons with a background in special education was provided by the Trust.

The Sunshine Early Stimulation Centre

The Sunshine Early Stimulation Centre opened in February 2007 under the aegis of the Sunshine Early Intervention Trust, a registered, non-profit organisation committed to the advancement of infants and children with developmental disabilities. The Centre is the only facility in Barbados that provides a full-time early stimulation programme for infants and children with disabilities from birth to five years.

Project Summary
Provision of funding towards the SESC Scholarship Fund. Support of the Scholarship Fund will ensure that SESC is able to continue to provide assistance to those parents whose children have learning and developmental disabilities and who simply cannot afford the private fees for the programme/services provided at the Centre.

Caribbean Dyslexia Centre

The Caribbean Dyslexia Association was registered in Barbados as a charity No 268, it is a special education institution created to cater to children and adults who have dyslexia. The Caribbean Dyslexia Centre (CDC) as the teaching arm of the organization was established with an initial student roll of 13 students on 4th October, 1994. The Caribbean Dyslexia Centre has created a special education niche for Barbados and the greater Caribbean Region and maintains the leading role in the region.

Project Summary
The Caribbean Dyslexia Association & Centre’s Diploma Certification Accreditation will ensure that the school continues to keep its fees low and additional teachers from the region will gain the necessary learning tools to work with students with the specific learning difficulties (dyslexia).

A contribution was made towards the redevelopment and extension of the Rehabilitation Services, the Upgrade of the Braille and Large Print Unit and the provision of an Enterprise Site License for JAWS (Job Access with Speech) – Screen reading software for the blind and visually impaired students.

The Barbados Vagrants & Homeless Society

The donation provided BVHS with the necessary funding to assist with the rehabilitation of vagrants and homeless people in our society who are in need of guidance to aid in the re-development of their coping and life skills, to rebuild their self-esteem and to educate the communities on helping the homeless and vagrants in the prevention of homelessness in their society.

Pathway to Youth Project

It is structured towards reaching young adults throughout the island of Barbados and beyond. YIWM targets the youth and seek help them to find inner strength and willingness not only to set but to achieve their goals.

Project Summary
The YIWM was able to secure a bus to transport persons participating in the programme to and from sessions and other activities. The main goal of the group is to encourage members to be independent while maintaining self-respect and also how to deal with the challenges of day to day life.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Paediatrics Department

The QEH Paediatric Department is the only tertiary healthcare institution in Barbados designed specifically to treat sick children.

Project Summary
The support provided by the Trust facilitated the purchase of essential equipment and supplies that chronically ill and critically injured children need on a daily basis. The equipment will assist the nurses and doctors with the treatment and care of sick children; reduce pain and suffering with effective modern technology.

Tomas Relief Fund
