The Autism Association of Barbados (AAB) was formed in March 2004 by several concerned individuals. Their vision was to create a community where persons suffering from the Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families receive respect, services and support based on individual differences, needs and preference.

Project Summary
The Trust provided funding over a three-year period for the establishment of a Pilot Project that would allow the AAB to experience the challenges of administering the larger program (which is to provide a residential and day care facility for sufferers of autism) on a smaller basis thus giving them the opportunity to understand and plan for the long term project.The Autism Association of Barbados Respite Home was officially opened on 23 April 2010.

The Barbados Cancer Society – Transport

Project Summary
The Trust provided funding to purchase a vehicle for transportation of patients who attend appointments for radiotherapy, chemotherapy, evaluation or blood tests and are unable to use public transport.

The Barbados Cancer Society – Colorectal Diagnostic Centre

Project Summary
The Trust provided funding towards the construction of a Colorectal Suite by extension to the existing Headquarters: suite of three rooms comprising of a larger area for performing clinical examinations, a recovery room and a consultant’s room that will be used for the Cancer Society’s colorectal and prostate programme.

 

The Barbados Cancer Society – Digital Mammography Centre

Project Summary
The Trust provided funding towards the construction of Digital Mammography Centre by extension to the Barbados Cancer Society Headquarters Building that presently houses a recently purchased digital mammography machine. This equipment is essential to the demand for low-cost mammography at their Breast Screening Unit.

 

The Needy Children’s Fund

The Needy Children’s Fund is a charity that was founded handedly managed by Dame Olga Lopes-Seale, a native of Guyana. Her main objective was to provide care and support financially and emotionally to those in Barbados that truly needed it.

Project Summary
A donation was granted by the Trust to assist with the annual children’s Christmas party in 2009.

 

Liberta Sports Club – Facilities

The Liberta Sports Club (Antigua) is a registered non-profit organisation with a committee of professional sports persons, coaches and educators. Their vision is to create a sporting area/facility where the community can take responsibility for encouraging the youth to have a more proactive outlook on life.

Project Summary
Funding is being provided by the Trust for the construction of a multi-purpose pavilion intended as a youth community centre and to start a youth training programme for local children to include cricket, football & netball. Thereby creating a sporting area/facility where the community can take responsibility for encouraging youth development through sports.

 

Barbados Council for the Disabled (Transport)

The Barbados Council for the Disabled is a non-governmental umbrella body partnering with all sectors of the community and international agencies to effect change and champion the rights of all persons with disabilities, ensuring their full and effective integration into society. Their vision is the realisation of a society that values, respects, empowers, accepts and includes all persons with disabilities and the recognition of the council as a catalyst in this process.

Project Summary
The Trust provided funding for the purchase of a minibus, fitted with an electro-hydraulic wheelchair lift.This will enable disabled persons to have safe and reliable transport to and from venues/communities and various activities.

YWCA (Breakfast Club)

The YWCA of Barbados was founded in 1950 and currently has a membership of over 200 persons. The membership is made up of a wide cross-section of girls and women from varying social and professional backgrounds. The motto of the YWCA Barbados is “United in Love and Service”. This is accompanied by their mission to promote empowerment, growth and development of women and girls while actively responding to relevant societal needs. The YWCA launched the Breakfast Club in 2007 for school children in various communities throughout Barbados.

Project Summary
The Trust donated to the Breakfast programme for those children living in low income or single-parent households. It will improve the nutritional status of children in school as well as their cognitive and academic performance. The Club currently provides breakfast for over 1,000 children on the island.

Diabetes Awareness Day’09

The Diabetes Foundation’s mission is to raise the standard of diabetes care in Barbados by increasing public awareness of the disease and improving self-management skills.

Project Summary
The Trust funded the Diabetes Global Village for 2009. The main objective is to raise diabetes awareness, promote the management of diabetes for health professionals and the general public, promote the acceptance of diabetes as a disease and to encourage self-management of the disease.

Children’s Development Centre (Audiometric Screen Booth)

The Children’s Development Centre provides diagnostic and therapeutic services for children with disabilities.

Project Summary
The Trust provided funding to cover the shortfall for the shipping of an Audiometric Screen Booth for the Centre.The Audiometric Screen Booth will aid the Audiologist in his daily analysis of children. This booth is used to conduct testing of children in a noise free environment for hearing loss and impairment.

The objective of the Trust is to ease the suffering of severely brain-injured children in Barbados thus improving their quality of their life.

Project Summary
The Trust provided funding for the provision of physical, occupational, speech therapy and other services which aid in the treatment of brain-injured children.

Project Summary
The Pamper Drive was started in 2004 as part of the Because of Jenna Trust initiative initially providing pampers for 5 children on a monthly basis. The number of children has now increased to over 25 children.

The Substance Abuse Foundation Inc. (Verdun House)

The Substance Abuse Foundation Inc. (SAF) is a registered Charity of Barbados and was established in 1996 by a group of concerned citizens, who recognised the need to provide a safe and secure environment for the treatment of individuals and families, whose lives had been devastated by alcohol and drug dependency.

Project Summary
The Trust provided funding for a Toyota Hiace van to transport the clients (patients of Verdun House) to and from Alcoholic Anonymous and Narcotic Anonymous meetings, court and medical appointments and to take clients on facility outings such as picnics and local cultural events.

Fostering

The Child Care Board is a Statutory Body established by the Child Care Board Act of 1969 and amended in 1981. The Board’s functions are varied but are all centered on the protection, safety and wellbeing of the children of Barbados. The Fostering programme was introduced for persons willing to care for children in their home as part of the family either on a long-term or short-term basis.

Project Summary
With the Donation from the Trust the Child Care Board can sensitize and encourage families to become foster parents. As more persons become aware of the Fostering programme, it is hoped that the Child Care Board will also notice an increase in the number of families available to the programme with the willingness to foster both boys and girls over five years old. The Project provides training workshops and information regarding fostering.
